The Historical Context

The superscription of the book (1:1) did not connect the setting of Habakkuk to the reign of any Judean king. The iniquities in 1:2-4 does not fit the period of the righteous king Josiah, so some interpreters placed Habakkuk earlier in the evil days of Manasseh (2 Kings 21:10-16).1 A more fitting context would be the violence created by the political changes in leadership in Jerusalem in Jehoiakim's reign (609-605 B.C.).2 Judah was under Egyptian control (2 Chron. 35:20—36:10).
